{"id":11258,"date":"2023-09-18T14:39:21","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T14:39:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flocoaching.nl\/a-commentary-on-the-guild-of-guides-code-of-conduct-guide-requirements-2\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T10:51:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T10:51:04","slug":"a-commentary-on-the-guild-of-guides-code-of-conduct-guide-requirements-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flocoaching.nl\/en\/a-commentary-on-the-guild-of-guides-code-of-conduct-guide-requirements-2\/","title":{"rendered":"A Commentary on the Guild of Guides Code of Conduct &#8211; Guide Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a coaching practice that is part of the Guild of Guides (Nederland), it is essential to follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guildofguides.org\/our-code\">code of conduct<\/a> that was drawn up collaboratively. In this way, coaches like us are held to a standard that guarantees a safe and comfortable experience for the people who come to us for coaching, supported by psychedelics.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is our commentary on the Guild of Guides code of conduct &#8211; guide requirements section &#8211; to clarify the rules and offer our perspective on some of the thinking behind them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Have a look at our previous blog on the &#8216;Participant Safety&#8217; section as well.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guide requirements<\/h2>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Guides have extensive <strong>personal experience with altered states of consciousness<\/strong>. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does a psychedelic therapist need to have experience with altered states of consciousness themselves? Most arguments fall on the side of yes. It allows them to &#8216;know&#8217; the &#8216;landscape&#8217;, and thereby better help the participants who come for guidance. That said, most coaching skills are general skills that have nothing to do with psychedelics. We have extensive experience with psychedelics, with more than 100 sessions. Even so, we wouldn&#8217;t be opposed to someone within the &#8216;regular&#8217; care system helping patients if they couldn&#8217;t have psychedelic experience themselves (e.g. for medical reasons).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides are well informed about <strong>contraindications for psychedelic experiences<\/strong> and are aware of interactions between substances\/medications\/supplements. They are familiar with the <strong>wide range of effects that psychedelic substances can produce<\/strong> and understand how to recognize and work with the various experiences clients may go through during their journey, including challenging experiences.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This paragraph highlights two distinct aspects, which can be addressed separately. First, as guides we should have basic knowledge about interactions with other drugs. At the same time, we can&#8217;t take on the role of a doctor (we simply don&#8217;t have that experience). Usually it is easiest not to accept clients who are currently taking medication. We understand that some guides may differ somewhat on this, although we would only help people who use medication if we know they are seeing a healthcare provider who is aware of the intended psychedelic use and can support their patient with it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second, we should be aware of the challenging experiences one can have with psychedelics, and in the days and weeks afterward. This is something we communicate early and often with clients who come for coaching (partly to counter the rose-tinted perspective that has been shaped in the media).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides strive for <strong>inclusion<\/strong> and challenging prejudice. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We don&#8217;t discriminate, simply put.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides have established sound emergency protocols to manage mental, spiritual, and physical health crises before, during, and after experiences.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thanks to nearly a decade of working in healthcare (Lotte), we know how to make referrals. Over time, we hope to be able to share fully written-out emergency protocols with other guides.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides <strong>know their own limitations<\/strong> and avoid working with clients for whom the guide feels no compassion, or where they lack the necessary skills and experience to support them.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The intake conversation with participants is a moment when we can get to know the person behind the question. A coaching path may not be the right one for them, and for us to guide them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides demonstrate <strong>good self-care<\/strong> and invest in their own mental, physical, and spiritual well-being and hygiene.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both Lotte and Floris have a regular mental and physical health practice. For the past few months, this has become considerably easier since moving out of the city and spending lots of time in our garden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides do not make <strong>false or exaggerated claims about psychedelics in their advertising<\/strong>. Guides are honest and open about what they can and cannot offer in terms of therapy and qualifications, and create clarity around the intentions of a session or retreat. Guides do not actively target vulnerable or desperate groups and individuals.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Psychedelics are not a panacea. We know the transformative nature of psychedelics, but we also respect the limitations and risks inherent in their use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides show <strong>great integrity and awareness<\/strong> around claims and are careful when talking about <strong>personal beliefs<\/strong>. They speak realistically about the nature of transformation. Guides strive and act to avoid harmful dynamics that can arise around (charismatic) leaders, positions of power, and the heightened suggestibility that occurs under the influence of psychedelic substances.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We are guides, nothing more than that. The person who comes for the session is the one in charge; we (merely) bring in our own knowledge to give them the most optimal experience for the situation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides operating in the Netherlands understand and <strong>abide by Dutch laws<\/strong>, customs, and the various rules that may apply to them and their work.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At present, psilocybin-containing magic truffles are the only legal option in the Netherlands. Other &#8216;research chemicals&#8217; one can obtain are &#8216;not for human consumption&#8217;, and that is an area we stay away from. We also don&#8217;t offer therapy; we offer coaching. We believe these are two areas we must be very clear about.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides have a basic understanding of<strong> <\/strong>power dynamics and therapeutic processes, even if they are not trained as therapists. Guides commit to <strong>ongoing training and education<\/strong>, and participate in (peer) supervision and\/or mentorship.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We both come to this work from somewhat different perspectives. Floris is learning a lot about coaching, while Lotte dives deeper into the aspects of psychedelics she is less familiar with. We believe training is one of the best investments you can make, and alongside each other we are scheduling supervision sessions and mentorship relationships with others in the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guides never exceed a ratio of 4:1 participants per guide in group experiences, and 2:1 clients per guide in a private session.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We currently only guide 1:1 sessions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>External guides, <strong>third parties<\/strong>, and volunteers working under the responsibility of a guide or organization also endorse this code of conduct.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We currently don&#8217;t work with volunteers, external guides, or third parties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Guild of Guides code of conduct offers an ethical framework for psychedelic guides in the Netherlands. As members, we strive to uphold these standards to guarantee safe, compassionate, and transformative experiences for our clients. While opinions on some details may differ, the core principles of integrity, inclusivity, education, realistic claims, and dedication to participant well-being resonate deeply with our own values as guides.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are committed to honoring the serious and sacred nature of these experiences by approaching our role with care, humility, and reverence. Our aim is to walk alongside participants with presence and equip them with the skills to integrate their journeys powerfully. By reflecting on these guidelines and holding ourselves accountable, we hope to contribute to the responsible emergence of psychedelic-supported practices that benefit individuals and society.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The path forward will require patience, wisdom, and ongoing dialogue as we explore uncharted terrain together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A closer look at the guide requirements in the Guild of Guides Code of Conduct.
